SciFi and Fantasy Books Reviewed
Howling Stones cover

I enjoy Alan Dean Foster in general and this book impressed me with his writing. His opening chapter reveals his main character Pulickel Tomochelor. (Don’t you love that name? He’s Indonesian.) He’s a diplomatic problem solving being sent far away to a troublesome planet teetering on the border between the Humanx Commonwealth and AAcon Empire, a rival alien species. (Raptor-like).

Mr. Foster carefully builds up the background of the planet and depicts Pulickel interacting with people, revealing his character. Then like any good author, throws in a character completely different from Pulickel, one he has never met before.

Meet Fawn. A six foot tall exo-diplomat who looks like a goddess, in Pulickel’s opinion. Since he’s her direct superior, he can’t tell her this. And she irks him. She’s very casual about diplomatic protocols and dress. She’s wearing a bikini that could fit in one of Pulickel’s pockets when she meets him. Then she saves his life. And the story continues.

Well done Alan Dean Foster! Anyone who likes alien based scifi, go for this book

I listened to this book in my car and chuckled on my 500-mile trip. Genuine Terry Pratchett humor, written long ago when he was a young man and recently updated and edited by Sir Pratchett himself. Why? “Because your imagination gets much bigger as you get older.”

Any lover of Terry Pratchett or humorous fantasy will love this.

New Science Books for You, and Science Fiction

New Science Books for You – let’s begin immediately with my book review.

New Science Book
The story of SpaceX

The dramatic inside story of the historic flights that launched SpaceX—and Elon Musk—from a shaky startup into the world’s leading-edge rocket company.

What a great description of the recent history of SpaceX, built and led by Elon Musk and his incredible team of dedicated engineers and space fanatics! Author Eric Berger interviewed the key leaders within the company, gleaning many wonderful stories around the development of the Falcon 1, the first independent commercial rocket to go into orbit.

Mr. Berger tells the story very well, building the characterization of each major person involved in the company. One of the key lessons for me was how effective Musk is at hiring people with passion and skill.

Given the personal descriptions of the engineers, as a reader you really pull for the team. You hurt as the first three Falcon 1 rockets crash and the team has to debug what went wrong and start over. You feel the urgency for success as Musk’s finances dwindle to just $30 million in cash for both SpaceX and Tesla, which was also strapped for cash.

I highly recommend this for anyone interested in Elon Musk, engineering, or the space program.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Books – You Begin Here

Out of the Dark - SciFi/Fantasy Book
David Weber’s book

David Weber once again creates a page-turning series. This one focuses on an invasion of the Earth by an alien species sent from a galactic empire.

The Earth is devastated. Half the population is killed from kinetic bombardments. Will the Earth surrender?

With vastly superior technology, the alien species is confident of conquest. Too bad humanity doesn’t know how to surrender.

The plot proceeds somewhat predictably but ends with a surprise twist. Some reviewers hated the twist. I liked it. Maybe I’m twisted?

If you like David Weber’s Honor Harrington series or John Ringo’s Posleen series, you’ll probably like this one

Here Comes Your Fantasy Book Review

Song for the Basilisk - Fantasy Book
Song for the Basilisk by Patricia McKillip

This was my second reading of ‘Song for the Basilisk’, the last one was over 20 years ago.

It’s even better the second time. I read it more slowly and understood the political machinations and the mysteries the author presented the reader. Patricia McKillip definitely has the ‘mystery’ + ‘fantasy’ combination to herself.

The premise is simple. There are four factions contending for rulership of the kingdom. The Basilisk slaughters one that has ruled for hundreds of years. One child escapes to a school for the bards.

The bards are musicians, storytellers, and magicians. But they only come to power by going to the hinterlands, where the magic is.

Meanwhile, the Basilisk rules in peace for 37 years. He has several daughters, one of which grows up learning all his magic.

Ms. McKillip brings all the elements together in a dramatic and surprising novel. It’s one of her best and that says a lot.

Story 4 out of 5 stars

Dumb…silly…juvenile…couldn’t put it down. Comfort food for that juvenile part of you that never quite outgrew your comic books. Just forget that it’s preposterous (after all, you were already warned by the title; what did you expect?), and go with the flow…
