This is the first book I’ve read of Kimberly Rogers and I enjoyed it. It was a classic fantasy romance tale, based off the fairy tale ‘Beauty and the Beast’. But there’s a twist.

The Fae Lord Faustin is slowly turning into a beast, and he has a goblin tinkerer who replaces his non-working parts with mechanical ones. Quite horrible, actually.

This curse is thanks to a hag who cursed him because he didn’t do what she wanted.

Then for the female lead character, Solange Durant, who’s an escapee from the French Revolution (the novel begins in 1796). There, they persecute people with magic. Solange is a changling, half fae, half human.

Desperate for work and pursued by anti-magic mob, Solange finds her way to Lord Faustin’s decrepit estate. That’s when the novel really begins.

What a cool book! I knew nothing about globemaking beyond gores; now I know a whole lot more, both of the multiple crafts involved and of its history.

But what makes the book great is the author’s personal story, telling how he went from making a handmade globe for his father’s 80th birthday to starting a bespoke globe company with a worldwide audience and customer base.

It’s a review of both the history of globemaking and of our recent history from 2008 to now.

I recommend this book to anyone with an ounce of curiosity.

The Best of 2024 Reviews – A Pub in the Underworld

Best February Reviews A Pub in the Underworld
The Best of 2024

I’ve read a lot of Harmon Cooper and this is the coziest book he’s ever written. Here we have a hardened soldier, Sylus Runewolf, dying as he fought his country’s enemies in a battle. After his death he wakes up in the underworld. What’s more, he has a deed to a pub.

Some of Sylus’ favorite memories are from his boyhood where he helped in his father’s pub, so he’s eager to get the pub up and going. It’s quite the fixer-upper. But he gets a pub cat, Patches, who’s magical and helps him protect the pub from rats–and demons.

The pub is in Ember Hollow which is hard by the Chasm, the hell that is below the underworld. Sometimes demons slip in. Overhead are are Celestial Plains, or heaven, glowing in the sky.

This book is a delight for brewers, fantasy lovers, and RPG lit readers!Do you have suggestions of books for me to read and review? Tell me all about them! If I read and review one you suggested, I’ll mention your name and give you a free book of your choice!

Zombie Turkeys
The Best of 2024

September 25, 2024
“Zombie Turkeys” is a wildly entertaining and unpredictable ride that combines humor, horror, and heart. Sam Melvin, a small-town reporter, and his editor, Lisa Kambacher, find themselves at the forefront of a zombie turkey apocalypse.
Standout Elements:
1. Unique blend of humor and horror.
2. Well-developed, relatable protagonists.
3. Fast-paced, action-packed narrative.

Storyline:
Sam and Lisa navigate a chaotic world overrun by undead, unstoppable turkeys. As they report on the crisis, they face numerous challenges, from bloodthirsty hordes to paranoid militias.
Final Thoughts:
“Zombie Turkeys” is an outrageously entertaining and clever novel that will leave you laughing and on the edge of your seat. With its unique blend of humor and horror, this book is a must-read for fans of the genre.

Great intro to the author’s works

This is a great book to start with if you haven’t tried any Andy Zach book before. It contains stories from both his Life After Life zombie comedy series and his superhero story Super Secrets. It also shows you Zach’s sense of humor (plus there’s one little horror story that isn’t overly gruesome). This book is great for both kids and adults and works just fine on it’s own.

I loved the silly story of the flying zombie cucumbers. Ha! Very fanciful. And they have migratory routes, like butterflies! Very silly and had me chuckling. I also loved the story with the hamster (who does play a role in Secret Supers). Perhaps rodents will truly save the world some day.

The stories also help fill in some of the blanks of the zombie comedy series, including one about Diane (the beloved zombie mother-in-law). But what I really liked was the stuff about genetic engineering and the aliens. Book 3 of the Life After Life Chronicles had a lot of stuff tossed into the story and some of these short stories really help fill those parts out.

All around, it’s a fun collection of tales. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Michael Stafford was a good pick for narrating this anthology. While the Life After Life series and the Secret Supers use different narrators, Stafford was a good inbetween voice. He had unique voices for all the characters and his female voices sounded feminine. I also liked his kid voices for the Secret Supers kids. The pacing was good and there were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

Luke Castle is my narrator for this book. I selected him because he was a teenager, like my superhero characters. They are Jeremy Gentle, a nerdy genius with cerebral palsy. Dan Elanga, a Cameroon immigrant who was blind. Kayla Verdera, a former cheerleader who got spinal meningitis, lost her voice, and sense of balance. Aubrey Wilcosky, a softball-playing athlete who lost two legs in a car accident.

Everyone can be brave and heroic

I love that someone is writing fun superstories in which disabled and differently abled kids can see themselves as potentially brave and heroic. The story doesn’t just show them doing impossible things that fully abled people can’t even do; it shows them using their heads to solve problems and cooperating together to use their different gifts to change the world for the better. And it’s well told, with a youthful sounding narrator that highlights the 12-13 years of the characters.

I received this free audiobook and voluntarily left this honest review.
