Your Best Books Reviewed in June

I review books on Goodreads. Here are some from June.

Hugh Lofting continues his imaginative exploration of the things the good Doctor Doolittle can do through talking to animals. This time it’s a post office run by them. In the fictional West African country of Fanditto.

As usual, the Doctor spends whatever money he gets on animals and people in need. As usual, his animal friends work together to get him more money. As usual, Hugh Lofting surprises with an imaginative riff within his story: how about a series of short stories by animals for an animal magazine?

This is still selling a hundred years after it was written for a good reason: it’s a great book. (less)

Andy Zach’s Review on Goodreads

I consider Doctor Doolittle a fantasy. But this next one is pure science fiction.

Your Best Books – Science Fiction

Span of Empire

Eric Flint and David Carrico bring the Jao trilogy to a satisfying conclusion with more aliens, more battles, new technology, more blood, and guts than ever before.

But is it the conclusion? Several items are left hanging, with new alien species and new Ekhat capabilities in the offing. Sadly, the original collaborator, K.D. Wentworth, has passed away. She worked on this novel before her death. David Carrico has collaborated with Eric Flint on the 1632 series and finished the novel seamlessly.

Will they write another Jao novel? It’s been five years since they wrote this one.

Tax Time! Get Tax Tips for Your Taxes from Author Andy Zach

Tax Time! Maybe you did know May 17th is the new April 15th? Anyway, besides being a comic science fiction author, I’ve also done my taxes for forty-seven years. That reaches back into the dark ages before personal computers–or cell phones.

If this is too boring to read, scroll down to the bottom, where I’m giving away 30 books and an ebook reader.

Tax Time! All My Tax Blog Posts

First, before I give you my latest tips, here are all my past tax blog posts:

How To Prepare Yourself Financially For The Zombie Apocalypse 2018/11/13 This was a guest blog by financial guru Michael Dinich.

Tax Time! What Can Top These Blogs?

That would be my experiences this year. Despite my best efforts at publishing, I made money–enough to tax. You see, I pour money into my books and use my business as a loss to reduce my taxes. But I made too much money this year. I owe the government money this coming May 17th.

It’s not solely that I made more money than ever before in books. (That is, I lost less than ever before.

Tax Time Andy's Book Sales
Andy Zach’s book sales and revenue (NOT PROFIT) I have revenue in red because I’ve lost money every year.

My wife began receiving social security. That’s a new source of income. It’s not taxed–until the end of the year, if you haven’t already paid enough taxes.

“What?!? They tax social security? Our Federal Government in Washington DC?” you ask.

“You bet. If you make any other money over a certain amount, you’ll be taxed on a portion of your social security, up to 50% of it.”

“Arggh! What can I do?”

“You can make less money. Reduce your income. Or have more deductions.”

“I’ll look behind door number 2, please.”

What’s Behind Door Number 2 – Increasing Your Deductions

What can you deduct? Here are some of the major categories of deductions.

  1. Business losses – spend more money on your business so you lose more!
  2. Medical expenses – Keep track of EVERYTHING. File every receipt. You can deduct some of it, including medical insurance expenses.
  3. Charitable deductions – Give away more to your favorite charities! This includes A. Money (have receipts for everything); B. Goods (Again, get receipts for everything); C. Travel Expenses. this includes trips there and back again for volunteering. I track my trips to church to lead my small group. You can too. You will get a mileage deduction.
  4. Mortgage interest – borrow more money and pay more interest.
  5. Local taxes – State and local income, real estate, or sales and use taxes. You can usually deduct sales or income, but not both. Check your state and federal laws carefully.

Is your head spinning yet? There’s more to come!

Secret Supers Excerpt for You, Text and Audiobook

Secret Supers Excerpt for You! Get your Secret Supers excerpt right in this post, below the book cover:

“Oh no,” Dan yelled.

“What’s the matter, Dan?” Jeremy asked.

“My parents’ house is on fire!”

“Did you get a text or something?” asked Darla.

“Uh, yeah.”

“Sorry to leave you in the lurch, Darla, but we’ve got to go and help,” said Aubrey.

“What can you do?”

“More than you think.”

“I’ve already called my car,” said Jeremy.

“Your car? You’re not old enough to drive,” asked Darla.

“I made a flying car. I can summon it here. See, there it is.”

Darla’s, the cheerleaders’, Rich’s, and the football players’ mouths dropped open as Jeremy’s car came flying down the street, as fast as any other car. Jeremy and Dan had modified it so it had a rumble seat in the back for Kayla and two running boards with grips and safety lines like a fire truck, for Dan and Aubrey to stand.

“That is SO COOL,” screamed Darla.

The Secret Supers climbed into the car. Jeremy transferred carefully from his wheelchair to the driver’s seat, not using his telekinesis.

“We’ll come back if we can. Watch my electric wheelchair,” said Jeremy as they zoomed off.

“Wow, Jeremy! You’re really going fast,” said Aubrey over the rushing wind.

“I told you I was getting stronger. I think we’ll have to modify this again for full seats for you and Dan.”

Secret Supers Excerpt – Second Part

“Hurry,” said Dan. “They’re trapped in the basement!”

“Okay, let me open her up.” The car sped up, and they began passing other cars on the road.

“Fifty-five, sixty miles an hour! That seems to be my limit, now. Hey, did someone call the fire department?”

“I did before we started,” said Dan. “Oh hurry!, The smoke is getting thick! They’re lying on the basement floor with wet clothes over their faces!”

A line of cars at a red light blocked them.

“Hold on! Kayla, shields up!”

Shields up, Captain Jeremy!

The car faded into invisibility.

“No one saw that,” said Dan, holding on for dear life as they soared over the cars and traffic lights. “Please hurry! My little sister is coughing on the smoke.”

“I guess we can dispense with the roads. My GPS says if we take a twenty-degree turn—”

“Look out for the high-tension wires,” screamed Aubrey.

Six high-voltage wires blocked their path, less than twenty feet away.

“Hold on,” yelled Jeremy.

The car dropped like an elevator with its cable cut. The Secret Supers ducked, and the wires passed where their heads had been a moment before. They could feel the hairs on their heads lift up from the intense voltage a foot away.

“Look out, a tree,” shouted Aubrey.

The car swerved around and over an oak tree blocking their path.

The Elanga’s house blazed ahead, a pillar of fire and smoke rooted in the disintegrating house.

Swooping down, Jeremy brought the car to a skidding halt in front of the house. A wall of heat burned their faces. Acrid smoke assailed their noses. In the distance, fire engine sirens blared.

Oh no! Dan, are we too late?

My Inspiration For Secret Supers Flying Car
