What Happens At Jesus’ Second Coming? Day 1

January 1 – Revelation1:1-2

This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, John, 2 who testified to God’s word and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, about everything that he saw.

What is the origin of the book of Revelation?

How did John get the book of Revelation? Through which Persons did the Revelation pass?

What is the purpose of the Revelation?

Who is the intended audience of Revelation?

What is in the Book of Revelation?

Prayer: Thank You, Almighty God, for giving us the book of Revelation, directly from You through Jesus Christ our Lord. Thank You for using Your created angels and sons of men to spread Your truth through all the world. Amen.

God gives us the name of the book: the Revelation of Jesus Christ. He gives us the topic, things which must happen soon, and shows the provenance of the book as the knowledge flows from His throne through Jesus, to His angel, to John, and then to the whole church.

January 2 – Revelation 1:3-4

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written in it, for the time is at hand. 4 John, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia.

Who is blessed by this book?

Why are these groups blessed?

What time is at hand?

To whom is John writing this book?

Prayer: Thank You, Holy Father, for blessing us for reading Your book, for blessing everyone who hears of the book, and for encouraging us to keep the things written within it. We’re delighted to hear of our brethren, the seven churches of Asia Minor, preserving this book and passing it on to us today. Amen.

We need encouragement, especially in difficult times. God gives us His blessing for reading or hearing the book of Revelation, and more, for keeping what He says. This means not only obeying the commands written within it but also keeping the words and promises within our minds for meditation and hope.

January 3 – Revelation 1:4-5

Grace to you and peace from God, who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before his throne; 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

Prayer: We praise You, Holy Father, Faithful Jesus Christ, and the sevenfold Holy Spirit given to Christians and with us to the end. You have given us Your grace, Your gifts, eternal life, and all that we need in this life. You give us Your peace in the violence, war, and chaos that is in this world. We know that Jesus Christ is Ruler over all the rulers of the Earth, and we have hope in You, now and forever. Amen.

Grace to you and peace from God. Grace, charis in Greek, means unmerited love. These are gifts to us from the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, along with peace from the eternal God, Who has always existed and is outside of time. Jesus is the faithful witness of these things and the firstborn of the dead. Jesus died in our place, so that we may be forgiven and live forever. He was the ruler of the Earth. He still is and will be forever.

My Devotional Book–Where Did THAT Come From?

Disabled Superheroes

My Devotional Book–Where Did THAT Come From? You’ve known me as Andy Zach, a comic scifi and fantasy author. Where did this Bible devotional come from? Written by Jeffry Smith? Who’s he?

It came from thirty plus years ago. ‘Jeffry Smith’ is my nom de plume for non-fiction.

The book began as a Bible study on the book of Revelation. I was tired of reading all the interpretations and arguments over what it meant. I was just focused on on thing: what did it say?

Going through the book verse by verse, writing every statement down, I got what the book was actually saying.

The first two verses took me like a half an hour or more.

Why?

Look at the verses:

This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, John, who testified to God’s word and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, about everything that he saw.

I broke these verses up into these statements:

  1. This (entire book) is the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
  2. Which God gave Him. (Jesus got the book from God the Father).
  3. To show to His servants (Christians are the servants of Jesus Christ.)
  4. The things which must happen soon. (Future events, from the point of view of John, the writer.)
  5. Which He sent and made known by His angel. (Jesus used His angel or messenger to send this message.)
  6. To His servant, John. (John is called Jesus’s servant. He received this book.)
  7. Who testified to God’s word and of the testimony of Jesus Christ. (This is what John wrote)
  8. About everything that he saw. (This testimony is about his visions from God.)

Whew!

TLDR Version – My Devotional Book

This kind of analysis is too complicated for most people. So I made it simpler. Here are the first two verses in the devotional:

January 1 – Revelation 1:1-2

This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, John, 2 who testified to God’s word and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, about everything that he saw.

After I completed the study, it lay in its handwritten version for years. Then I typed it up on my computer, where it resided for more years. Then I decided to make it into a class about Revelation.

I decided I would skip any interpretation and just teach what the book said. That became an eight week class of hour and a half sessions, going through all twenty two chapters.

Teaching the class at my church and then at Bradley University helped me refine it.

My students demanded another book of Revelation class covering the interpretation of its symbols.

So I created a class covering all the symbols in the book, showing how they were used elsewhere in the Bible

By this time I was pretty familiar with the book of Revelation, forty years after I started studying it. How’d it become a book?

Publishing my first Bible help, The Gospel Medley, encouraged me to try writing a The Revelation Devotional. Reading Timothy Keller’s The Songs of Jesus devotional about the book of Psalms inspired me. Also, one of my friends, Leslie McKee, also wrote a devotional, Hope Amid the Pain. She also edited my book.

So how did a fiction author, Andy Zach, end up writing a non-fiction book about the most mysterious book in the Bible under the name Jeffry Smith?

First, the book Revelation always fascinated me When I read the Bible for the first time, I read the book of Revelation first, because I’d heard how mysterious and hard to understand it was.

I read it and there were a lot of things I didn’t understand, but I did understand that God wins in the end.

Over ten years later, after reading many interpretations of the book, I decided to see exactly what it said. I went through it verse by verse and wrote down every statement it made. Here’s Revelation 1:1 for example:

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,

Revelation 1:1

The statements I found in this verse are:

  • The book of Revelation is from Jesus Christ
  • God (the Father) gave Jesus this revelation
  • Why was it given? To show Jesus’s servants what must soon take place.
  • How did this revelation come to John? Jesus sent it by His angel.

Revelation has many other verses this densely packed with information.
